Honor Him

There is too much in the news to write about one thing this time. The Alternative is about alternate views that don’t often get exposed. Outside the box, but acceptable opinion. This nonsense about the US controlling other countries is too reminiscent of some awful times in history where citizens stood by then wondered what the hell happened. It appears we are too far gone already. The choice is batten down the hatches or make an effort to salvage what’s left. I find it interesting that the most self righteous are pitted against each other with everyone else being taken down with them.

Honor Him (trying to get through to those who have lost their way)

On the way home from the Hampton Airport where we were loading cover crop seed onto an Air Tractor, I tuned into NPR for an alternative to, uh I’m not sure what; ten second news stories? There was a young gal on there complaining about “old white men wanting to control my healthcare.” She said, “Planned Parenthood is so much more than abortion.” From the phony conservative from National Review to the regular leftists of NPR, they were all aghast at the prospect of a government shutdown.

It is mighty disconcerting to know that the vast majority of Americans now believe they don’t have enough stake in their world to take care of it themselves. They would rather foist their own healthcare off on some faceless unaccountable blob funded by old white men with no say in how their money is spent. Well guess what? Accountability only comes from a refusal to pay or a return for further service.

It is presumptuous of this girl to expect something for nothing when those old white men have no control over her lifestyle. How are they supposed to control costs when they don’t even know this person?

I hope this is a simple enough explanation of why medical costs have gone through the roof. By the way, I finally found a statistic on spending of Medicare that seems to indicate the tip of a huge iceberg: about 30% of all Medicare spending goes to patients in the final 6 months of life. I have yet to find Medicare as a percentage of total healthcare spending. Let me know. Anyone who blames the free market for high medical costs should note, there hasn’t been a free market in medicine since 1965. It is time to abandon a failed system, not expand or protect it.

On to a trivial break from life and death struggles, for fun. What morons we are for thinking government should have anything to say in who signs a marriage contract. What a waste of a courtroom, the air conditioning, the walls, the security guards, all of it. If this woman doesn’t want to do her job she should seek employment elsewhere. But that is a minor issue compared to why taxpayers forgo a steak dinner or shoes for their kids to humor this woman. The case should never have been heard or the county clerk’s time wasted issuing marriage licenses.

Travis’ most important point in last week’s article on Kim Davis is this: As long as we haggle over details relating to which liberty government can restrict instead of the restriction of any liberty at all, our liberties will be at risk as those who oppose our views use precedent we fought for against us. The line should be drawn at any government power, not which government power.

Still heavy after all, eh? My friend, Melba’s mention of “diligently watching news casts” immediately brought to mind one of my most influential books, “1984.” In it, the population is controlled through “telescreens,” now called newscasts. The world is kept in a perpetual state of war with slogans such as “WAR IS PEACE, FREEDOM IS SLAVERY, and IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH.” My stepmother often suggests I don’t know what is going on because we don’t watch TV news. I believe the opposite.

At the risk of being branded as a part of the “blame America” crowd, I will instead doubt the actions of our politicians as being anywhere near the actions of the patriotic heroes they portend to be. In the recent string of foreign policy disasters we see evidence that it must stop.

Before the neo-cons thought they could either make the Middle East an oil colony or a democratic utopia it was much more stable than it is now. Migrants were people too productive in the Middle Eastern culture so they fled to Western countries to better themselves (and the countries they adopted as their own). Now they flee for their lives. But have you noticed 90% of them are young males? Think of the possibilities, not that I am suggesting anything in particular.

I would also not suggest that we not be vigilant in our relationship with Iran. But the tough guy posturing by so-called conservative pundits and politicians is just more newspeak showing they are in the pockets of oil interests and war profiteers. It has nothing to do with keeping America safe. To have such sweeping acts of war as we have perpetrated on Iran be based on some rhetoric so similar to our own, is not in keeping with a country guided by morality. The billions of dollars we are supposedly giving Iran was taken from them in the first place. Sanctions are an act of war in anyone’s book outside the Ministry of Truth.

Like the gay wedding issue, the ultimate solution is to keep our noses out of other people’s business and reserve aggression for when it is warranted. Anything else creates more enemies and diminishes our ability to address a real crisis when it arrives.

How all this relates to cover crops is this: the soil is a living thing. Any time it spends without cover kills some of the life in that soil. We take for granted God’s gift of life in so many ways. Unborn babies, Iranian people, they are all created by God. To destroy them is no way to honor Him.

Patriot’s Day

On the calendar, it says Patriot’s Day. But I think it is really Sucker’s Day.
Fourteen years ago, Osama bin Laden alledgedly orchestrated the famous attack on America. Although no proof was arrived at in a court of law, bin Laden who supposedly hates America, played us for suckers. We are led to believe that bin Laden’s damage was some buildings, some airplanes, and 3,000 lives. But with the collaboration of the military/industrial complex, three trillion dollars was removed by our own government from a private sector that is the backbone of our prosperity and 5,000 servicemen were sent to their deaths. The slow death of what makes America stand out is also a product of the Neo-con government we allow, freedom. How many people know that our records and computers can now be searched without a warrant?

Bankrupt

Ben Carson had a favorable editorial in the weekend Wall Street Journal. Oh man how I’d love to hold him to this statement”Government will bankrupt itself if it considers itself a savior.” American exceptionalism will rear its ugly head again. Israel is worth saving, right? So, what? Print more. Come on folks let’s cut the exceptions. Let’s be principled.

Tell me that not mentioned in this article, Ben won’t saddle Americans with the saving of Israel, thus perpetuating profits for the defense [sic] industry.

I met Merle Haggard today

I first saw Merle live at the Spokane Opera House. It was brand new (new brand, as Hans used to say) and the sound was awful. Shoulda walked out but wanted to get my scarce money’s worth.

Now living in Iowa we are lucky to have the Surf Ballroom nearby so we’ve been there twice to hear Merle. Truly a great man and thinker. I’m sure he loves to see somebody like Mo Pitney come along to carry the torch (or whatever burning thing he might care to carry). After this video is a link to an article about Merle’s opinion of modern country music that is shared by many.

None of the Above

(I do need to explain how socialism makes poor people poorer and creates more poor people. But with all the media attention given to Iowa and the presidential race I thought it was a good time to offer some alternative opinion on that subject. Only the tip of that iceberg is touched on here. Baby steps.)

Hillary is still in the news. What rates her more newsworthy than the people who are spraying graffiti around Hampton can only be that we know who she is. The really big news should be that there is a mainstream politician running for president who admits to being a socialist.

Imagine that, after hundreds of socialists have run for president, we finally have one who claims the title. I thought it would be interesting to describe what the politicians really are rather than what they claim to promise.

I’ll start with Bernie in honor of my fellow ex-hippies. Bernie wants it fair for everyone. He sees “the rich” as undeserving so he sees government as the great equalizer. Bernie wants everyone to be poor. He wants there to be no entry level jobs. He hates small business and looks at entrepreneurship as exploitation.

But Trump is making all the headlines. Jeb Bush listed all his fairly recent positions that would disqualify him as a legitimate conservative in a video. Most important among them was his past support for Hillary Clinton, not a policy idea that would require thought.

Illegal immigration has been Trump’s big issue. If there is anything Americans hate, it’s competition. We don’t want foreigners stealing our handouts or doing a better job for lower pay. So in this case being a conservative and family friendly means having a government strong and intrusive enough to deport (as George Will pointed out) 10% of California and 13% of California’s K-12 students. It would take a massive police state to accomplish Trump’s goal. After eighty years of a war on drugs with no dent in supply, does he really think a police action could cleanse our country of unwanted foreigners? I doubt there would be any workers left to furnish Americans with the necessities of life.

The same goes for trade. Trump proposes a 35% import tax. Out of one side of his mouth he derides favors to special interests while calling for the ultimate favor to special interests, making it too expensive to buy goods that compete with (yep) special interests. A fellow called Hannity the other day bringing up the fact Trump wants to do what Republicans complained Obama did; raise taxes on imports (tires). Hannity said, “we have to fight back,” a fitting answer from a show whose advertisers promise to improve manhood and eliminate “rotten food and toxic sludge” from our bloated bellies.

Ted Cruz and anyone else who complains about “amnesty” is basically saying they want a huge police state that would rival the Stasi of East Germany. Incredibly, these same candidates rail against big government when the policies they promote require big government.

These are the same people who would have our soldiers occupy the Middle East to keep us safe here. Can you imagine how many U.S. soldiers it would take to make the Middle East stable and safe enough that no threat emanated from there to us in America?

The illegal immigration issue is a perfect example of misapplied government. We have troops all over the world, leaving our borders unregulated. Then the answers from the candidates all involve more government.

The establishment Republicans are absolutely freaking out over Trump but I think it is all a big show. Trump poses no threat to their love of corporate control of government or our funding of it. He is one of them. He drums up crises with more government as the only solution when people get along just fine if left to iron things out alone.

Demographics

Had a chance to hear some of Sean Hannity’s radio show yesterday. There was a guy analyzing the presidential race. Pretty bizarre. One caller brought up Trump’s promise to tax imports at 35% and the effect of that on consumers. Sean said we just gotta fight back. The caller said, “well yeah.”

Then it occurred to me. He has to cater to the demographics of his audience. The fools who believe what is said on there. Advertisers include a product that promises to clean rotten food and toxic waste from our bloated bellies and Andro400, which will make us all real men.

Well. There you go.
