I was the last one out planting corn in Iowa today. We don’t till the soil. Instead we plant in the same row every year. As i was driving along I startled a Killdeer. They run around threateningly when they have a nest nearby, spreading their wills and tail. She was just two feet away from my feet. I looked and looked and nearly gave up when I spotted the nest right in last year’s bean row. It was amazingly camouflaged. I had stepped on one of the eggs as I walked around looking for it. I tossed the wrecked egg out so it wouldn’t stink up the nest and carefully drove the planter up to the nest then raised it and lowered it when it reached the other side of the nest.
As long as we are here:

This would get a “like” and a “share” on Facebook. Great story.
I found another one later on and didn’t step on it. One problem might be having the whole field planted around the nesting sites kinda defeats the camouflage. There are lots of predators around here.

Lots of coyotes because we killed off the top predator, the wolf..
We thought we saw a wolf run across the road a month ago. That was at the same time there was one confirmed by Clarion.
